Dental Anxiety? Easy Steps to Overcome Your Fear of the Dentist

For some of us, the hardest part about going to the dentist is physically sitting in the chair. If this is something you experience then you are definitely not alone. Many people feel anxious at the prospect of a dental visit, even if it’s just for a routine cleaning, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

Whether it’s fear of the unknown, pain, or embarrassment about your oral health, dental anxiety shouldn’t hold you back from getting the care that you need.

Try Distraction Methods

Distraction techniques can be highly effective. Consider bringing headphones and listening to relaxing music or an audiobook during your procedure. When you focus your attention on something else, it helps make the time pass faster while also reducing your anxiety.

Consider Relaxation Techniques

Take the time to mentally prepare yourself before you enter the dentist office. Deep breathing exercises are a great way to center your mind and help you maintain a sense of calm. Remember, the better and more relaxed that your mental state is, the easier your appointment will be.

Bring a Friend or Loved One

There’s no reason to go through this on your own. Consider bringing a friend or loved one with you to your appointment so that you feel safer and more supported.

Arrive Early

Part of reducing your dental anxiety is making sure that you are in a good mindset when you get there. Make a point to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your appointment. That way, you give yourself time to familiarize yourself with your environment and won’t be dealing with unnecessary stress from rushing to be there on time.

Let Your Dentist Know

Don’t be shy about communicating your anxieties to your dentist. It’s highly unlikely that you will be their first patient that finds the experience uncomfortable and they’ll have techniques to keep you calm throughout the experience.

Ask Lots of Questions

Patient education is a massive part of a dentist’s job, and the more questions you ask, the better. Find out what the procedure will entail and what you should expect during each part of it. Often people experience dental anxiety due to fear of the unknown, so this should help alleviate some of your concerns.

Choose the Right Dentist

If you trust your dentist, the whole process will go much easier. Take the time to research the office and check out reviews to see what other patients have said. The friendlier and more caring that the staff is, the more relaxed you will feel. Look for someone who is willing to sit down and answer your questions, and will prioritize your comfort no matter what.
